Charleston loves a ghost story, especially in October. But most of the sounds in Lowcountry homes, from historic downtown singles to newer homes in Summerville and Mount Pleasant, have ordinary explanations.

Before tracking one down, note when it happens, where it seems to come from, and what else was going on.

Why Homes Creak and Pop

Wood framing, heart pine floors, and plaster move with temperature and humidity. Older homes on raised foundations can be especially talkative. New cracks, sticking doors, or soft floors are worth a professional look, particularly where crawlspace moisture can affect wood.

Plumbing Noises

A bang after the washer shuts off is often water hammer. Running water when nothing is on deserves a meter check.

A/C and Heat Pump Sounds

Heat pumps click, hum, and hiss in defrost mode on cool mornings. A gurgle can mean the condensate drain needs attention. Crawlspace dehumidifiers hum as they run. New grinding, squealing, or rattling is worth a call. If you use a generator after a storm, keep it outside.

Wind and Shutters

Coastal wind can whistle through older windows and rattle shutters, piazza screens, and gutters. Live oak and palm branches brushing the roof are common.

Squirrels, Rats, and Crawlspace Visitors

Squirrels are active during the day. Roof rats and mice are active at night. Raised foundations and crawlspaces give animals shelter. A licensed pest or wildlife professional can help.

What to Tell the Professional

Describe the sound, where and when you hear it, and what else is running. "The shutters on the piazza side rattle whenever the wind comes off the harbor" tells a contractor exactly where to look.

If you'd like a recommendation for a local plumber, HVAC technician, or pest professional, just ask. We're happy to share names we know.
